The Short Black Film Project ran during the first week of the April School Holidays, 2008, with film maker Vinnie McManus and camera operator, Brian Rapsley. Young people brainstormed ideas for a script for the film with the working title of ’You Got Me Wrong”.
The concept of the film was scripted to portray how the community perceived indigenous young people living in Marrickville. It was a very spontaneous process where young people wrote the script, found locations and allocated roles for themselves.
The launch and presentation of the DVD was shown at the Marrickville Short Black Film Festival during NAIDOC Week in July. Participants, their families and the wider community attended this event. At time of writing the film has been entered into young people’s film competitions and is being considered for curriculum material by the Department of Education and Training. Funding for this project was provided by The Foundation of Young Australians Indigenous Grant.
